Walmer Castle - Saturday 25th June 2011
We were thinking of going back up to the Lincs coast again, but with reports that things that way had dropped off, we decided to go to Walmer Castle in Kent.
So with bait ordered ready for picking up on arrival we set off on the journey. As usual the glorious M25 lived up to its reputation, adding about half an hour to our journey
We stopped off in Dover for some fish and chips from the chippy that was once Steelys favourite and just over the road from his old house, which went down well, and set us both up for the rest of the day
Anyway, we arrived at Channel Angling, situated at the entrance to Deal pier, to pick up the bait, and we have too say, the lug were top drawer, and given his location right at the entrance to what was already a busy pier, with lots of rods already out, we expect he sells plenty of these worms, and if/when we decide to fish in the area again, the place we would definately buy from again
Even with the traffic on the M25, we had planned to start fishing at 3pm, and we arrived and had rods in the water just before this time, so 2 happy chappies sat and waited.
Bri, didnt have to wait long, as his 1st cast saw his rod tip bend with what looked like a real solid take, however, he missed it! But undetered his other rod was ready to oblige, and he reeled in his 1st fish of the day, a doggie
Bri soon followed this with another doggie, whilst Steely just sat and took in the rays
The beach had a couple of other anglers out to our right (We fished about 300 yards to the right of the Castle, for those who like to know these things), and we both observed how litter free the beach was............
Anyway, after about an hour Steely who had aslo missed a couple of bites, finally landed, what felt like a big fish during the retrieve, but ended up as a double shot of doggis on a pulley pennel!!
The fish continued to come at irregular times throughout the session, with the final tally being 9 fish to Bri (Slug, Dab, eel and 6 doggies) and 8 fish to Steely (Eel, whiting and 6 doggies)
So having lost on numbers of fish, Steely decided to see if he could win the biggest fish of the day.............and no he couldnt as Bri took this with one of his doggies, so how about biggest eel, seeing as we both had one................nope Bri again took this as well, so clutching at straws, I decided I had the biggest whiting of the day..... We could now both return to our trip as winners!!
The sea was coloured, so Bri's hopes of doing some float fishing were dashed, but a top day was had by both.
A couple of the anglers just to our right decided to have a BBQ, and with the wind drifting the smells down the beach, Bri decided a quick dash to the local petrol station was in order to get one going ourselves, so thanks to them, for inspiring us to do this ourselves, with some fine bangers and burgers duly scoffed which only added to the day.
Just before we packed up, one of the anglers from the right headed our way, offering his left over bait, (always good to see I think), and he sat down and chatted for about 5 minutes, and we both asked him if he was a regular on this stretch of the beach, hoping that we might pry a bit more local knowledge, which, we were hoping for, but as he left, and asked, "where did you get the tent thingys (Our bivvies) our ecpectations maybe were not as high as when he sat down..
Anyway we packed up at 8pm, a few fish, some hot scoff, red faces from the sun, and again we were not let down by the M25 on the return leg, as we struggled to get through the Dartford tunnel adding yet another 30 minutes to our home time.
